Today's passage gives us one of the most important purposes of the book.
N.T. Wright says:
Luke, whose first volume we know as the gospel which bears his name, is telling us with his opening sentence one of the most important things about the whole book which is now beginning. It is all about what Jesus is continuing to do and to teach. The mysterious presence of Jesus, haunts the whole story. He is announced as King and Lord, not as an increasingly distant memory but as a living and powerful reality, a person who can be known and loved, obeyed and followed, a person who continues to act within the real world.
As we are going to use 40 days to go back to the very beginning of Jesus teaching, may we share the same experience as those disciples of Jesus had in that 40 days after He was risen to the day of His ascension. May we be in the presence of Jesus in the coming 40 days starting tomorrow to break every possible hindrance we could have that Jesus cannot be our Lord so that we can build a true lifestyle of Christlikeness.
