Bible Study

Paul is referring to two situations in Corinth. The first one is that around the year AD 51 there was a severe shortage of grain causing famine. The second one is that Paul thought the end time would come in a short while. He wants to tell the Corinthians that even the crisis of famine passes, there will be the final crisis to face. In that situation, engaged couples should think about postponing their marriages.

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
Paul wants to help them through this present time, and is now building on the previous verses (17-24) in order to say: who you are as a Christian matters much more than changing your social status, so don't be worried about whether you may need to postpone your marriage. It's not a problem...

What will matter is that you were faithful to the Lord in whatever strange circumstances you found yourself.  And that is the main point Paul is now going on to make.

What matter most in your life recently? Does Jesus has a place there?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: It's not a problem

What I got from Jesus today is an invitation for us to get away from all distraction, fear and insecurity to focus on Jesus. There are so many problems surrounding us that we can never have the energy or wisdom to tackle with. So many people including Christians are in deep depression because of all those problems.

Jesus draws my attention to the Daniel painting again this morning for you to meditate on. I found it hanging in the wall of the place Toronto Emmanuel Church is having their Sunday worship, the office of InTouch ministry. I put that in my desktop of my computer to remind me each day that if I can lift my eyes upon Jesus, then those lions won't be a problem.

    Right? It's not a problem!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be able to lift our eyes upon you so that nothing can be a problem drawing us away from you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
