Bible Study

We started two days ago from the beginning of Hebrews 11, the chapter of faith to tell the story of God's true people, Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham and Sarah.  How they lived their lives by faith as good models for us to follow and as a check-up whether we are God's true people. Today, the author leads us to look at a deeper and wider angel of their faith, all pointing beyond this earthly life. Beyond death and towards the future heavenly city(verse 16).

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
The picture of faith is thus being filled out from one angle after another, as the chapter follows the story of Israel's beginnings.  It remains a constant challenge to us as we read it today.  Will we continue to trust God for his promises, even if there is little sign within our own lifetime of their being fulfilled?  Have we thought through, and firmly grasped, the nature of the 'heavenly city' which we are promised, towards which all earthly cities are at best long-range signposts?

N.T. Wright. Hebrews for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.139.

We should learn by now from the author that by faith, nothing is impossible. But, do you have that kind of faith as the author wants to show us today that even you die, you have faith and peace to die longing to enter into that heavenly city?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

Spiritual Journal

The title I heard from Jesus today is: Faith beyond our own lifetime

The message I got from Jesus today can open our eyes to be able to see deep down in our souls that coming heavenly city, the Holy City that is going to come one day. One day after we die! Unless Jesus returns in our lifetime.

For the past twenty six years as a priest I have helped numerous brothers and sisters to courageously accept that they were going to die. Some of them could not get away from great fear, most of them die peacefully, and some even joyfully. What is the difference?

I think the difference is what Bishop N.T. Wright says as I quoted in my blog yesterday:

The faith in question, as becomes increasingly clear throughout the chapter, is the faith which hears and believes the promise of God, the assured word from the world's creator that he is also the world's redeemer..

Those who can be able to hear and believe the promise of God can be able to see that Holy City and can have the faith beyond our own lifetime.

Have you got that kind of faith? Have you got that kind of relationship with Jesus that you can hear and believe in His promise?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be abel to hear your personal words to us each day so that we can have that faith looking forward beyond our lifetime. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
