Bible Study

This passage consists of several short passages. Each one concluded with three words "then he died". What does this kind of repetition really means? What is the message Genesis 5 wants to say to you?

Let's take a look at what Professor John Goldingay says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :

There is nothing of the family and community strife referred to in Genesis 4.  Yet there is a solemnity to this family history.  All these patriarchs live to a great age.  But they all die...
The series of minibiographies tells our whole story as human beings.  You get born.  You marry.  You have children.  You live some more.  Maybe you think you will live forever.  But actually you die...But we do die, and only when we recognize this reality can we work out how to live.

John Goldingay. Genesis for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2010, p.86-87.

Do you recognize this reality? How do you get away from the fear of death but to work out how to live?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

The title I heard from Jesus today is: Then he died. We all die.

The message I receive from Jesus today is a clue for us to live better, far more better than we can think of.

Do you afraid of dying? Have you experienced what Psalm 23: 4 "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death" ?

There should be more people afraid of dying than those who do not afraid of dying, right? Why?

Well, there are so many people do not even want to mention or talk of death. Lots of people do not recognize the reality is that you are going to die someday.

Genesis 5 gives us  so many "then he died" trying to tell us this is the reality. As Psalm 23:4 says, only those who are with the Lord will not fear death. The daily being with Jesus is the key for us not to be afraid of dying but to work out how to live following the abiding daily walk with Jesus.

We all die. But, for those who are in Christ, we all live!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to recognize the reality that we all have to die so that we are not afraid of death but to be with you each day so that we all live. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
