OT DAY 85 - Don't Become A Deceiver (請按此處收聼廣東話Cantonese podcast click here)

Starting last week we add one important thing to our daily devotion. We start our devotion with one to two verses from the Psalms to praise God. We always have so limited vocabulary when we want to praise God. Let's learn from the Psalms so that we can be able to praise God in a better way:

Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

                    Psalm 20: 7
Today's Reading: Genesis 30:22-43

Bible Study

This passage shows us how Jacob used the wisdom God gave to deceiver Laban right after Laban deceived him to work for him for fourteen years. Have you been playing this game as one of many deceivers?

Let's take a look at what Professor John Goldingay says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :

Jacob continues to be the great deceiver and in this story continues taking part with Laban in the network TV contest for the "Deceiver of the Year" award
This time the shrewd Laban has met his match in the even cleverer Jacob.

John Goldingay. Genesis for Everyone - Part Two. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2010, p.103-104.

What insight can you get from Jacob's weakness to play a deceiver's role?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

The title I heard from Jesus today is: Don't become a deceiver

What Jesus tells me today is a warning not to become a deceiver. Starting from the beginning when we read Jacob's story, he performs all kinds of deceiving intention and skill. He is so skillful to deceive other people. And, his name is Israel, God appointed Father of all Israelites!

We can see later in his life how painful it is for Jacob as a result of his weakness. You need to know that one of many names of Satan is the Deceiver. There is nothing good if we follow Jacob or other people's weakness to become one of those deceivers. The more you deceive other people, the more you are "Devil-like" and not Christlike.

     Don't become a deceiver!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Prepare our hearts that we will not become a deceiver.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
