Bible Study

It happens quite often as new Christians start to read the Bible that some of them will stop reading or skip reading those chapters like this one. Why? They think that it has no meaning. Full of names! What's the use of that. Do you think so?

Let's take a look at what Professor John Goldingay says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :

As Ecclesiastes comments, we are born, we die, we are forgotten.
It is a strange fact that the Israelites ensured that so many of Esau's family did not get totally forgotten
The story of Esau and Jacob recapitulates the story of Abraham and Lot as well as that of Ishmael and Isaac.  Once again there is not enough room in the country for both households.  It is a sign of their flourishing, of their experiencing God's blessing.  And it is Esau who takes the initiative and moves south and east to the country that becomes Edom.  It is also a sign of God's blessing that Edom generates not merely chiefs but kings, a fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham (Genesis 17:6), and one that comes about before God fulfills the same promise to Jacob (Genesis 35:11).

John Goldingay. Genesis for Everyone - Part Two. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2010, p.128-129.

So, do you have a new understanding to those chapters full of names now? Do you know we will be blessed and flourish as God's people? How much more can you love your parents, grandparents before they complete their journey on earth?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

The title I heard from Jesus today is: Love your parents and grandparents

What Jesus tells me today is a reminder that all those names are full of meaning. First, the ancestors are not being forgotten. Second, telling us God's people are being blessed and will keep on flourishing.

Old people are so easy to be forgotten even before they die. Michelle and I watched our most favourite Hong Kong TV program last night "Come Home Love" about how Mr. Tiger Ma scolds a couple of not loving and ignoring the husband's mother. Yes, because of our busy-ness and selfishness our parents, grandparents are so easily forgotten.

Love your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents(if you have any). Don't forget them. If they have passed away, tell your children about their stories. Then, you and your family will keep flourishing because you are God's people.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us not to forget our parents, grandparents but to love them. Give us assurance that our family will keep on flourishing because we are your children. In Jesus Name we pray. Amen.
