Bible Study

Yesterday we talked about Paul concludes this book with two commands. After that two commands, just like Paul's other letters, he completed this book with the name of those who loved him and supported him. Paul even put in a wider spectrum of all the communities in the area.

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
Paul wants to remind the Corinthians, as he has done at various points in the letter, that they are not the only people the gospel has reached.  They are part of a much larger family, sewn into a much larger fabric.

N.T. Wright. Paul for Everyone:1 Corinthians. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.234-235.

Do you know that you are being loved and supported by many people in your own church and perhaps in a wider Christian communities?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: You are being loved and supported by many

What I got from Jesus today is an encouragement that we are never alone. In most of Paul's letters, he completed with quite a number of names of Christian leaders who loved and supported him.

Do you know that you are being loved and supported by many Christians? How important it is that you are sure that you are being loved and supported by many Christians?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be able to enjoy the love and support of those brothers and sisters you prepare for us so that we can be encouraged each day to experienced the sweet and intimate relationship with you and others and be able to do your Kingdom ministry. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Paul concludes this book with two commands:
1. A command to soldiers to stay alert.
2. A command to Christians to do everything in love.

How can we stay alert as a soldier ready to fight any possible warfare happen any time and at the same time to do everything in love? Not easy!

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
The four commands correspond to what an army commander might say to someone on guard, and they form an ascending scale: keep awake, stand firm, be brave, be strong! The guard must stay awake and alert in case of any danger.  Not only so; he must know his ground and not give way.  When actual danger threatens, bravery is required to face up to it.  When he has to deal with it he needs to act with all his strength…
But, in the process, they must never imagine that the gospel can be helped forwards by brute force, bullying or arrogance. 'Everything you do must be done in love'; that has been the keynote of the whole letter, and Paul wants to remind them of it as he moves towards the close.

N.T. Wright. Paul for Everyone:1 Corinthians. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.234-235.

How can you stay alert as a soldier of Christ but still can fight your warfare with love?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: Stay alert as a soldier for Christ and do everything in love

What I got from Jesus today is a warning to all of us that we do not know how to stay alert. The four commands may help us if we really understand what it means. Do you know what it really means? Can you visualize the four commands with actions?
1. Keep awake: don't fall asleep.
2. Stand firm: don't give way.
3. Be Brave: No fear, be ready to face any danger
4. Be strong: don't let anyone or anything to scare you, use every strength to fight for Jesus

And, doing all those four actions like a soldier and with love. It's hard to imagine, how can a soldier holding a machine gun fighting for his country and shooting with love? I think what Paul means is to be filled with the Holy Spirit in all times so that you are being anointed by the greatest gift and that is love. Sometimes it is "tough" love, sometimes it is a love to forgive and in all times, just love.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be able to stay alert as a soldier to fight a good spiritual warfare for you and can be filled with love in all times. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

We Are Being Robbed Today in Hong Kong

Jesus says, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. "
                                                          John 10:10

What Jesus says is what we experienced just four hours ago!

Today is a very special day!

At 7:15p.m., we met with quite a number of our relatives, some we have not met for 46 years because of family "fight"! I was asked to say grace in the beginning of tonight's dinner and it was so moving. All the sadness, misunderstanding and curse is gone and we are all free!

At 8:45p.m., my sister Ada received a call from the janitor of her school(My sister is the principal of an Anglican High School and she lived on the top floor of the school. Michelle and I lived in her home with our mom now) that some people heard my sister's Filipino maid cried for help. He went up to my sister's home and saw the maid was being tied on the floor. He went down and call the police and then called my sister.

The police went in and found the maid was being tied up as well as my sister's dog, a Beagle. The maid was then admitted to the hospital, stayed there for three hours and just came back(the time is now 12:40a.m.). Now the police were asking her what really happened.

We came back home at around 9:30p.m. There were at least twenty police searching the whole school floor by floor and room by room.(My sister is on the top, 7th floor). There was an Inspector in charge and then a Chief Inspector came with a few Inspectors.

There are 137 CCTV monitors in the school and because of that they caught a guy hiding inside a room in the school with confirmation that he went up to my sister's floor. They got him! Hong Kong Police is so, so good!

Nothing valuable seems being stolen and no one being hurt.

Please pray for Requel, the maid as she was being tied up from her neck, to her both hand and feet. She is still in great shock! And my mom is in shock too because she thought she might be the one being tied up if she were at home.

Praise the Lord for His protection and your prayers!

Can you believe what I wrote in yesterday's Devotion on Fire 2:

Joy in Crisis: http://bishopsilas2.blogspot.ca/2013_11_01_archive.html
Joy in Crisis Really Happened Today: http://bishopsilas2.blogspot.ca/
What a meaningful examination paper we are having today! Joy in crisis!

The lesson for me today is that the thief may come any time without any warning. When someone experiences great shock of this kind or worse experience may not have peace or even live in fear. The worse is not the stealing, but Satan's killing and destroying. Only Jesus' daily intimate personal relationship can give us peace, assurance and life! Only Jesus and no one else!

Today is the first day in Advent. New Year Day for the Church. What a meaningful and blessed New Year Day for us today!

Jesus is Lord!  Thank you Lord!

Bible Study

Paul comes to a new issue in today's passage. He wants to ask all Christians to support his plan of fund-raising for the church in Jerusalem. Why?

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
The problem arises from the very purpose that Paul is using the collection for: to signal to the Gentile Christians that they are part of the same family as the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem; and, more importantly still, to signal to the Jewish Christians that those Gentiles out there, who have come to faith in Jesus as the Messiah and the true Lord of the world, are part of the same family as they are, even though they haven't become Jews in the process.
That was the issue Paul faced in Galatians.  Now he has developed this plan for the collection as a long-term strategy for making both 'sides' of the great ethnic divide in the early church understand the truth of the matter.  So this letter, which has addressed the problem of divisions within the church, and of the urgent need for love at the heart of everything, brings it all into focus with a practical, hard-headed scheme.  And now he's concerned about the detailed arrangements for making it all work.

N.T. Wright. Paul for Everyone:1 Corinthians. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.230.

If your church has a similar fund-raising campaign, how would your people make it works?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

Spiritual Journal

What I heard from Jesus today is: How to make God's fund-raising campaign works?

What I got from Jesus today is a call for you to support with everything you are able to your church and other places Jesus calls you to in money matters.

When you say you love your family but you do not want to give sufficient money to build up your family in love, you do not have much love to your family. When you say you love your church but you do not want to tithe or make extra offerings when your church is in need, you do not have much love to your church.

How to make God's fund-raising campaign works? Very simple, you ask Jesus and he will tell you. Then, what you need to do is whether you are willing to give that much! Not easy, not easy at all! Why? Because the title of your examination paper is "Is Jesus your Lord or money your lord?"

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be willing to give our money to our church according to your will so that you are our Lord and not money.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
