Bible Study

Paul comes to a new issue in today's passage. He wants to ask all Christians to support his plan of fund-raising for the church in Jerusalem. Why?

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
The problem arises from the very purpose that Paul is using the collection for: to signal to the Gentile Christians that they are part of the same family as the Jewish Christians in Jerusalem; and, more importantly still, to signal to the Jewish Christians that those Gentiles out there, who have come to faith in Jesus as the Messiah and the true Lord of the world, are part of the same family as they are, even though they haven't become Jews in the process.
That was the issue Paul faced in Galatians.  Now he has developed this plan for the collection as a long-term strategy for making both 'sides' of the great ethnic divide in the early church understand the truth of the matter.  So this letter, which has addressed the problem of divisions within the church, and of the urgent need for love at the heart of everything, brings it all into focus with a practical, hard-headed scheme.  And now he's concerned about the detailed arrangements for making it all work.

If your church has a similar fund-raising campaign, how would your people make it works?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: How to make God's fund-raising campaign works?

What I got from Jesus today is a call for you to support with everything you are able to your church and other places Jesus calls you to in money matters.

When you say you love your family but you do not want to give sufficient money to build up your family in love, you do not have much love to your family. When you say you love your church but you do not want to tithe or make extra offerings when your church is in need, you do not have much love to your church.

How to make God's fund-raising campaign works? Very simple, you ask Jesus and he will tell you. Then, what you need to do is whether you are willing to give that much! Not easy, not easy at all! Why? Because the title of your examination paper is "Is Jesus your Lord or money your lord?"

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be willing to give our money to our church according to your will so that you are our Lord and not money.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
