Bible Study

Paul continues to talk about death and resurrection in this passage and in a way that is not easy to understand.

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
Paul's picture of the resurrection of the body in verses 1-5 is not a picture of something that happens immediately after death, but of something that happens to enable us to stand before our Lord when he comes as judge.  So what goes on in between?
Paul is quite clear.  This, actually, is one of the points where the gospel enables him to be clearer than other Jewish teachers of the time. When he dies, he will be 'at home with the Lord'. During this life, although we know the Lord Jesus by faith, not least when we share the fellowship of his sufferings (Philippians 3:8-10), we are essentially 'away from the Lord'.  He is in heaven; we are on earth….in the meantime, when they die, members of the royal family (those who have been 'anointed' by the spirit, as Jesus was: see 1.21) go from the body to be 'with the Lord'. There they will wait until the time when everything is made new.

Do you know what Bishop Wright is trying to say?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: To die is to be with Jesus

What I got from Jesus today is a word of comfort and assurance. You may not be able to understand what Paul says in this passage or what Bishop N.T. Wright trying to explain. That's not a big deal. The big deal is you need to know that when you die to go to be with Jesus. And, that's the big deal! Only if you are being anointed by the Holy Spirit! As says by Paul in 1.21.

So, are you being anointed by the Holy Spirit? How do you know you are being anointed by the Holy Spirit? Well, not difficult, right? Check your life with  Galatians 5: 16 - 26 now.

Come Holy Spirit, come,
Fill us and pour down your fresh anointing on us that we can be sure that we are going to be with Jesus when we die.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
