Bible Study

From deep suffering, Paul talks about fear of death. It is not easy to understand how he talks about heaven. What is heaven to you?

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
For Paul in this passage - and it is typical of many in the New Testament - 'heaven' is not the place we go to when we die, but rather the place where God has our future bodies already in store for us…

The resurrection body, then, will be similar to the present one in some respects and quite different in others.  It's hard to imagine just what it will be like; the resurrection of Jesus himself was regarded by Paul and others in the early church as the model and prototype of the one that is to come..
Paul returns once more to what he said in 1.22: the holy spirit, God's own gift to all his people in the present time, is the first instalment and guarantee of the new life that is yet to come.  The spirit, as Paul says in Romans 8.9-11, was the means by which God raised Jesus himself; and the spirit will do the same for us.

Do you know why you do not need to have the fear of death? Do you know why fearing death is totally wrong worry?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: Fear of death? Totally wrong worry!

What I got from Jesus today is a new angle to face sufferings, crisis or even death. Paul says very clearly in this passage that the Holy Spirit is the first instalment(deposit) and guarantee of the new life that is to come.

So, when we face with sufferings, crisis or even death, the worry we need to have is whether we have the Holy Spirit with us. If we have the Holy Spirit with us, live in the Holy Spirit, walk with the Holy Spirit, then we should have no fear of anything and not being trapped in darkness or depression. If we have strong fear of death, being trapped in darkness or depression, it means we do not have the Holy Spirit with us. That is the real problem, not death!

Come Holy Spirit, come,
Fill us each day that we are free each day. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
