OT DAY 502 - Do What God Commands, Surely Become A Mighty Warrior (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

      The Lord is my light and my salvation;
          whom shall I fear?
       The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
          of whom shall I be afraid?
                                     Psalm 27:1

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

     “Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

     "Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (1 Kings 17:1-24)

Now Elijah the Tishbite, of Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.” And the word of the Lord came to him: “Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith, which is east of the Jordan. You shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.” So he went and did according to the word of the Lord. He went and lived by the brook Cherith that is east of the Jordan. And the ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. And after a while the brook dried up, because there was no rain in the land.
Then the word of the Lord came to him, “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.”
                                         1 Kings 17:1-9

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

          We know that Elijah is a great and powerful prophet. What we also missed is that how faithful, obedient and courageous he was and how many times he acted right after God commanded him. If you could do that, have that relationship with God, you also can be a mighty warriors of God.

    Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:
     (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :
           In the manner of Solomon, Ahab encourages political relationships with Tyre, the big power to the northeast, by marrying one of the kings' daughters, Jezebel. This requires him to facilitate the practice of her faith and thus the reacting of an altar to the Master(Baal) and an Asherah in the new capital his father had built. It is in light of Ahab's political and religious policies that Elijah declares there is going to be a drought. It is hardly possible to imagine a bigger catastrophe. If there is no rain, nothing grows, people have nothing to eat, and they die.

          Elijah received the command of God to deliver a message which could point to his being executed by King Ahab. Do you have this kind of courage to respond to God's call and command? If you have, then you will surely experience God's provision, power and many spiritual gifts. The sad thing is that most Christians do not have the faith and courage to walk the first step!

           How about you? To become God's mighty warrior or not depends on your first faithful and courageous step. One step at a time!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Give us the gift of faith so that we can make our first step responding to your call and command.   In Jesus Name I pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
     1. What kind of faith and courage have you seen from Elijah? How can you follow his example to make that first step?

2. Do you know that first step of faith that God has been calling you for a long time?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?
