OT DAY 554 - Not Fearing God, Being Destroyed at Last (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

       Turn away from evil and do good;
          seek peace and pursue it.
The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
and his ears toward their cry.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
to cut off the memory of them from the earth.

                                     Psalm 34:14-16

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

“Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

"Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (2 Kings 17:1-41)

18 Therefore the Lord was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight. None was left but the tribe of Judah only.
19 Judah also did not keep the commandments of the Lord their God, but walked in the customs that Israel had introduced. 20 And the Lord rejected all the descendants of Israel and afflicted them and gave them into the hand of plunderers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

34 To this day they do according to the former manner. They do not fear the Lord, and they do not follow the statutes or the rules or the law or the commandment that the Lord commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel. 35 The Lord made a covenant with them and commanded them, “You shall not fear other gods or bow yourselves to them or serve them or sacrifice to them, 36 but you shall fear the Lordwho brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm. You shall bow yourselves to him, and to him you shall sacrifice. 37 And the statutes and the rules and the law and the commandment that he wrote for you, you shall always be careful to do. You shall not fear other gods, 38 and you shall not forget the covenant that I have made with you. You shall not fear other gods, 39 but you shall fear the Lord your God, and he will deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.” 40 However, they would not listen, but they did according to their former manner.
41 So these nations feared the Lord and also served their carved images. Their children did likewise, and their children's children—as their fathers did, so they do to this day.
                                           2 Kings 17:18-20, 34-41
Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

When I read this chapter, I was full of sadness and pain! How God tried all His best to save His people and to teach them one thing: FEAR GOD! But, what they did was fear everything other than God, continue to fear everything other than God and they were finished!

Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:
Those dynamics operate on the corporate level in this account of the devastation fall of Israel, which terminated its existence as a nationthey are like the kind of memoir in which someone reflects on the life and experience of a family member
One possible context for a first edition of this memoir is the century that immediately followed. Whereas Israel fell in 722, Judah continued in existence as a nation until 587. For the next century or so Israel's story stands as a warning to it. It must learn from its brother's fate. It needs to read Israel's story in light of where it ended and of the religious and theological evaluation this chapter offers.
It didn't do so: "Judah, too, did not keep the commands of Yahweh their God but walked by the laws of Israel, which it had practiced." The next context for an edition of this memoir is the decades that follow Judah's consequent fall in 587, the period at which 1 and 2 Kings will eventually end.

That could be the consequence of anyone who insists on living their own way not fearing God and not following Jesus as Lord and King.
Let's take this warning and be very careful of our daily walk!

    Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to use everything we have and everything we can to follow you each day as our Lord and King.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
    1. How do you feel about this terrible tragedy of the end of God's people because not listen and obey to God?

2. How can you prevent yourself from doing that and help other people not doing that?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?
