OT DAY 551 - Arrogant, Following Past Sinful Patterns, Your Downfall (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

Oh, fear the Lord, you his saints,
for those who fear him have no lack!
        The young lions suffer want and hunger;
but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.

                                     Psalm 34:9-10

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

“Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

"Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (2 Kings 14:1-29)

And Jehoash king of Israel sent word to Amaziah king of Judah, “A thistle on Lebanon sent to a cedar on Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son for a wife,’ and a wild beast of Lebanon passed by and trampled down the thistle. 10 You have indeed
struck down Edom, and your heart has lifted you up. Be content with your glory, and stay at home, for why should you provoke trouble so that you fall, you and Judah with you?”
11 But Amaziah would not listen. So Jehoash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced one another in battle at Beth-shemesh, which belongs to Judah. 12 And Judah was defeated by Israel, and every man fled to his home. 13 And Jehoash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Jehoash, son of Ahaziah, at Beth-shemesh, and came to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem for four hundred cubits, from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate. 14 And he seized all the gold and silver, and all the vessels that were found in the house of the Lord and in the treasuries of the king's house, also hostages, and he returned to Samaria.

19 And they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish. But they sent after him to Lachish and put him to death there. 20 And they brought him on horses; and he was buried in Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David.

23 In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash, king of Judah, Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, began to reign in Samaria, and he reigned forty-one years. 24 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. He did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which he made Israel to sin.
                                                 2 Kings 14:9-14, 19-20, 23-24
Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

This chapter shows us how King Amaziah was being destroyed by his own pride and how King Jeroboam could not get away the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat.
You may aware the whole 1 and 2 Kings says many times of those Kings of Israel could not get away the sins of Jeroboam, the son of Nebat. Why?Because the Bible wants to tell us lots of time we are being influenced by our ancestors or previous kings and leaders. It is like some kind of virus we cannot get rid of. Today's passage talks about two virus that may have severe consequence to our lives:
    1. Our pride
    2. The sins of our ancestors or previous kings or leaders

Our pride blinds us so that we would make wrong decisions stepping into mine fields destroying us just like how it destroyed King Amaziah.
The sins of our ancestors or previous leaders may lead us into the same sins we might not be aware of and if we do not know or even if we know and not willing to cut lose of those sins we will surely be in big trouble!
The point is that we do not have the ability to remove our pride and we do not have the awareness to see those sins. We need the light of the Holy Spirit to shine upon us so that we can see. We need the blood of Jesus to cleanse us and the power of Jesus to renew us and be more and more Christlike.

    Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us not to step into the sins caused by our own pride and the sins of our ancestors or previous kings and leaders.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
    1. Do you think you have pride that could destroy you? Do you think you are still following some unaware sins of your ancestors or previous leaders?

2. How can you get rid of all those sins?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?
