OT DAY 541 - Rise Up, Train at Least Three Generations of Disciples for Jesus (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

       Therefore let everyone who is godly
    offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found;
surely in the rush of great waters,
    they shall not reach him.
        You are a hiding place for me;
    you preserve me from trouble;
    you surround me with shouts of deliverance.

                                     Psalm 32:6-7

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

     “Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

     "Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (1 Kings 19:15-16, 2 Kings 9:1-29)

15 And the Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. 16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place.
                             1 Kings 19:15-16

Then Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets and said to him,“Tie up your garments, and take this flask of oil in your hand, and go to Ramoth-gilead. And when you arrive, look there for Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat, son of Nimshi. And go in and have him rise from among his fellows, and lead him to an inner chamber. Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say, ‘Thus says the LordI anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and flee; do not linger.”
So the young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead. And when he came, behold, the commanders of the army were in council. And he said, “I have a word for you, O commander.” And Jehu said, “To which of us all?” And he said, “To you, O commander.” So he arose and went into the house. And the young man poured the oil on his head, saying to him, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, I anoint you king over the people of the Lord, over Israel. And you shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge on Jezebel the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord.For the whole house of Ahab shall perish, and I will cut off from Ahab every male,bond or free, in Israel. And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. 10 And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and none shall bury her.” Then he opened the door and fled.
2 Kings 9:1-10

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

            The prophecy Elijah had on 1 Kings 19:15-17 did not happen in his time but in Elisha's time. We had one fulfilled in yesterday's passage and we have another one in today's passage. Elisha sent a disciple to anoint Jehu as king of Israel and so Elijah's prophecy is being fulfilled, not by Elijah, not by Elijah's disciple's Elisha but by Elisha disciple. Wow! Three generations of discipling! Three generations of passing the baton to listen and obey to the discipler's order to have God's prophetic word fulfilled.

     Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:
     (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :
              The unnamed young prophet says a lot more than Elisha commissions, though what he says restates words of God from earlier, and it is unlikely that we are to infer that he went beyond his commission.

       Lots of time we think that we are so important doing important works. In fact, the most important job we have is to raise up leaders, disciples for God. Can you imagine God uses you to do a big job but not being completed in your time but two to three generations later?

       Rise up brothers and sisters, let's try our best to make disciples for Jesus of at least three generations!

    Dear Lord Jesus,
    Lead us to be able to make disciples for you of at least three generations.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
   1. Do you understand God needs you to raise up leaders?

2. Are you willing to give your time and money for Jesus to raise up at least three generations of disciples?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?
