OT DAY 458 - God's Army with David (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

       I have set the Lord always before me;
           because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
        Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
           my flesh also dwells secure.
                                     Psalm 16:8-9

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

     “Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

     "Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (2 Samuel 5:1-25)

       And David lived in the stronghold and called it the city of David. And David built the city all around from the Millo inward. 10 And David became greater and greater, for the Lord, the God of hosts, was with him.
     22 And the Philistines came up yet again and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim.23 And when David inquired of the Lord, he said, “You shall not go up; go around to their rear, and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 24 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then rouse yourself, for then the Lord has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.”25 And David did as the Lord commanded him, and struck down the Philistines from Geba to Gezer.
          2   Samuel 5:9-10, 22-25

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

          How does the Bible tell us the reason for David to be greater and greater? Because God was with him. How does the Bible tell us why David had a victory over the Philistines great army? Because God gave David a plan and God's army went ahead of David's army. Wow! Could similar victory happen to you? Yes! If you follow David's model.

    Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:

           So the city of the Jebusites becomes "the city of David". This all happens because Yahweh Armies was with David…David could have complimented himself on what great man he was. He could have started believing in his own publicity or believing what people said about him. That is what happens to successful leaders. The story tells us that he didn't. He saw that God had exalted him for Israel's sake…
           The Philistines realize they need to put David in his place before he becomes too big for them, and they march up toward Jerusalem and camp in the Rephaim Vale, to the southwest of the city. Not only does David ask God about whether to attack them; on the second occasion God issues him precise battle instructions…We don't know what kind of tress the baca trees were but the rustling David will hear in the top of them will be the sound of the heavenly armies that are also involved in the conflict. It is indeed Yahweh the God of Armies who goes with David.

John Goldingay. 1 and 2 Samuel for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.127, 128.

       Are you in victory or in bad shapes? Do you know that Yahweh the God of Armies can go with you? Or, do you choose your own ability, your own wisdom and your own power and strategy to fight a war you cannot win?

       Kneel down and ask God to give you His plan, anoints you and be with you. Then, His Army will be with you to victory!

      Yesterday, I had a miraculous victory to lead Mr. Ho to Jesus. It was at first a mission impossible but because of God and His Army, it is now a victory and a soul is being saved. See the picture, his joyful daughter Jen who is the fiancee of my God son, Raymond Sham. Yes, God gave me a plan, God gave me a timing and the courage to do something I cannot do!

Dear Lord Jesus,
    Help us to follow David's model to victory.  In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
  1. Do you believe that God's Army can be with you to victory?

2. What have your learned from David's model today?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?

Praise and Thanksgiving
