1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
         I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”
                                     Psalm 16:1-2

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

“Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

"Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (2 Samuel 2:1-11)

After this David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “To which shall I go up?” And he said, “To Hebron.” So David went up there, and his two wives also, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel. And David brought up his men who were with him, everyone with his household, and they lived in the towns of Hebron. And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed Davidking over the house of Judah.
When they told David, “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul,” David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, “May you be blessed by the Lord, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried him. Now may the Lord show steadfast love and faithfulness to you. And I will do good to you because you have done this thing. Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be valiant, for Saul your lord is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”
But Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul's army, took Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim, and he made him king over Gilead and the Ashurites and Jezreel and Ephraim and Benjamin and all Israel. 10 Ish-bosheth, Saul's son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. 11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.                       2   Samuel 2:1-11

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

Although David addressed Saul as the mighty but Saul is not really mighty. May be before he left God and Samuel he was once mighty. David is the true mighty because he take refuge in our Mighty God, listen and obey to God and walk with God. At last, we learn from today's passage David became king. Did he faced with hardships and troubles? Yes, of course. Lots of hardships and troubles. But, all those hardships and troubles served to shape him as the true mighty and king.

Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:

David story as a whole offers some support for both understandings of how someone become king of Israel. It involves both God's anointing and people's acceptance. Long ago, God sent Samuel to anoint David as the person who was to replace Saul. Henceforth you could perhaps say that in God's eyes David is king. But David becomes king in practice, in Israel's life, only when the people accept him. That will try out to be a gradual, human, political, messy, conflictual process.

John Goldingay. 1 and 2 Samuel for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.118.

I do hope David's experience can give you comfort and encouragement if you are facing with hardships and troubles.

Yes, the true mighty takes refuge in God and because of that he can have breakthrough whenever he faces with hardship and trouble. I do hope and pray that you are the true mighty!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to be willing to take refuge in you so that we can have breakthrough even facing with hardships and troubles.  In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
   1. Who do you think is true mighty? Why?

2. How can you be a mighty disciple of Jesus?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?

Praise and Thanksgiving
