OT DAY 461 - David Was About to Fall After God Gave Him Victory Wherever He Went (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
                                     Psalm 18:2

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

“Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

"Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (2 Samuel 8:1-18)

After this David defeated the Philistines and subdued them, and David took Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines.
And he defeated Moab and he measured them with a line, making them lie down on the ground. Two lines he measured to be put to death, and one full line to be spared. And the Moabites became servants to David and brought tribute.
David also defeated Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to restore his power at the river Euphrates. And David took from him 1,700 horsemen, and 20,000 foot soldiers. And David hamstrung all the chariot horses but left enough for 100 chariots. And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David struck down 22,000 men of the Syrians. Then David put garrisons in Aram of Damascus, and the Syrians became servants to David and brought tribute. And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.

13 And David made a name for himself when he returned from striking down 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. 14 Then he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, and all the Edomites became David's servants. And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.
          2   Samuel 8:1-6, 13-14

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

It states in this chapter two time that "The Lord gave victory to David wherever he went". How come the second part of today's topic is "He is about to fall"? How scary it is when we are victory in all area and then it means we are about to fall? Scary!

Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:

In chapters 8 to 10 of Samuel, David reaches the height of his achievements, but he is about to fall. The chapters are the highpoint in his story with regard to his religious, military, economic, and political accomplishments.

John Goldingay. 1 and 2 Samuel for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.137.

That's the painful reality of being human beings. We might be in the same situation if we think that we are in control and lose guard of our sinful nature. Let's keep this in mind because in two days time we will know what happen to David as he stepped into the trap of wicked human sin.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to be watchful in case we would follow David's foolishness.  In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
    1. What would you think if you were David in such kind of great victory?

2. How come David would fall after he experienced God's mighty salvation and power in that magnitude ?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?

Praise and Thanksgiving
