OT DAY 465 - Sins Spread to Sons And Daughters (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

       This God—his way is perfect;
           the word of the Lord proves true;
          he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
                                     Psalm 18:30

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

     “Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

     "Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (2 Samuel 13:1-14)

       Now Absalom, David's son, had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar. And after a time Amnon, David's son, loved her. And Amnon was so tormented that he made himself ill because of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible to Amnon to do anything to her. But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother. And Jonadab was a very crafty man. And he said to him, “O son of the king, why are you so haggard morning after morning? Will you not tell me?” Amnon said to him, “I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister.” Jonadab said to him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend to be ill. And when your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and prepare the food in my sight, that I may see it and eat it from her hand.’” So Amnon lay down and pretended to be ill. And when the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand.”
Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, “Go to your brother Amnon's house and prepare food for him.” So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house, where he was lying down. And she took dough and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and baked the cakes. And she took the pan and emptied it out before him, but he refused to eat. And Amnon said, “Send out everyone from me.” So everyone went out from him. 10 Then Amnon said to Tamar, “Bring the food into the chamber, that I may eat from your hand.” And Tamar took the cakes she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother. 11 But when she brought them near him to eat, he took hold of her and said to her, “Come, lie with me, my sister.”12 She answered him, “No, my brother, do not violate me, for such a thing is not done in Israel; do not do this outrageous thing. 13 As for me, where could I carry my shame? And as for you, you would be as one of the outrageous fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.” 14 But he would not listen to her, and being stronger than she, he violated her and lay with her.

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

          This is such terrible happening! David's son raped David's daughter! Anything to do with David's sin?

    Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:

           The story of Tamar begins immediately to show that David has not sinned merely against God and against Uriah and against Bathsheba and against the child who died and against the Israelite troops at Rabbah and against Israel as a whole. He has sinned against his daughter Tamar (and for that matter against his son Amnon) because the kind of person he was issues in the kind of behaviour that appears in his family and because he brings down God's judgment on his own household as a judgment on David himself. The story presupposes that David's grown-up sons have their own homes, and Amnon's rape of Tamar does not involve incest in the strictest sense, as they will have two different mothers. Tamar can therefore raise the possibility that David would be willing for Amnon to marry Tamar, though she may simply be trying any means to avoid the rape that in fact happens.

John Goldingay. 1 and 2 Samuel for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.150-151.

       Don't underestimate the wicked and destructive force of sin. It could all start with the lusty look at a woman who were bathing and end up with a rape of David's son to David's daughter! According to Exodus 20: 5, sins can spread to the third and fourth generation. Terrible, isn't it?

Dear Lord Jesus,
    Help us to understand that sin is like a kind of most poisonous virus that could pass on to generations.  In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
    1. Could you imagine sins can spread like that?

2. How can you stop this virus before it is too late?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?

Praise and Thanksgiving
