OT DAY 522 - Receive Your Discipler's Baton Secret 1: Draw as Close as Possible (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

      You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
          you have loosed my sackcloth
          and clothed me with gladness,
that my glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!
                                     Psalm 30:11-12

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

“Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

"Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (2 Kings 2:1-6)

Now when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.” But Elisha said, “As the Lordlives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they went down to Bethel. And the sons of the prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he said, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.”
Elijah said to him, “Elisha, please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to Jericho.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So they came to Jericho. The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the Lord will take away your master from over you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.”
Then Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on.
                                      2 Kings 2:1-6

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

After Elijah got his one and only one disciple Elisha in 1 Kings 19, there is no mentioning of Elisha until today's chapter. How can we learn from Elisha's experience so that we can receive power and gifts from our coach is today's big question.
You may think that you do not need anyone and you like to be a Rambo type of leader. You may think that you do not need to do anything and you would receive everything your discipler has. I don't think so. You need to do something in order that you can take the baton from your discipler.
First thing first, the first secret for us to take the baton from our discipler is to follow him/her as close as possible. Three times Elijah tested Elisha asking him not to follow. Three times Elisha answered his spiritual father, his discipler, his coach and his mentor that he is not going to leave him, never!
Do you know what kind of faithful relationship is that? I think all leaders have the painful experience to be dumped by those they discipled wholeheartedly. I just don't understand why those disciples can be so self-centred and selfish to dump, deserted their disciplers.
The power of God given to us is all about relationship. It's all about how close we are with God and also how close we are with those He appointed to nurture us and help us to be raised as great leaders.
Don't leave your discipler! Draw as close as you can to him/her or them!

    Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank you for giving us disciplers who care for us, love us, protect us and nurture us. Help us never to desert our disciplers so that we can receive the power and gifts from them just as how Elisha received power and gifts from Elijah.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
    1. Do you have a discipler? How well is you relationship with your discipler, how close you are with him/her? If you do not have a discipler, is this the time for you to pray to God to get you one?

2. How difficult it is for Elisha to be so close with Elijah in Elijah's last day on earth? How difficult it is for you to be as close as you can to your discipler?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?
