OT DAY 529 - Why Great Wrath from God (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

       Incline your ear to me;
           rescue me speedily!
         Be a rock of refuge for me,
           a strong fortress to save me!
         For you are my rock and my fortress;
           and for your name's sake you lead me and guide me;
                                     Psalm 31:2-3

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

     “Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

     "Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (2 Kings 3:26-27)

26 When the king of Moab saw that the battle was going against him, he took with him 700 swordsmen to break through, opposite the king of Edom, but they could not. 27 Then he took his oldest son who was to reign in his place and offered him for a burnt offering on the wall. And there came great wrath against Israel. And they withdrew from him and returned to their own land.        2 Kings 3:26-27

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

           Mesha, the king of Moab, killed his elder son to make sacrifice to his gods. Terrible! But, after that the three kings stopped their attack and went home. What happened actually?

     Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:
     (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :
           A desperate situation requires desperate measures, and as the king he is the one who has to take them. And they work.
           How so? What is this wrath that comes on Israel? Is it Yahweh's wrath? Is it the wrath of Chemosh, the Moabite god? Is it simply wrath - is that a way of describing the way victory is turned into catastrophe? Does the sacrifice work by galvanizing the Moabites? Does it work by paralyzing the Israelites? It seems that the storytellers do not know and do not pretend to explain what they do not know. While spiritual or theological insight sometimes makes it possible to know things, it does not always do so. There are strange things that happen in life that we cannot explain, and we have to live with them on the basis of the clues God has given us about the big picture that we can understand. It is encouraging that the Scriptures do not pretend to know everything; it is then easier to trust them when they think they do know things.

John Goldingay. 1 and 2 Kings for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.117.

     Are you satisfy with this answer today? No one knows why God poured out His wrath and the warfare suddenly stopped with no reason. Actually the Bible does not say the wrath comes from God, but the Chinese translation has God wrath there.

     We as human beings like to ask why. This is the time for us to learn that there are times that we really won't know why, and that's fine.

    Dear Lord Jesus,
    Help us to understand that we may never understand why you do things like that but just to trust you and to love you.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
    1. Do you like to ask why?

2. What kind of inspiration have you got today for not able to know why?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?
