Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
If I would count them, they are more than the sand.
I awake, and I am still with you.
                    Psalm 139:17-18

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

“Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

"Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (Ruth 1:1-9)

In the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land, and a man of Bethlehem in Judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, he and his wife and his two sons. The name of the man was Elimelech and the name of his wife Naomi, and the names of his two sons were Mahlon and Chilion. They were Ephrathites from Bethlehem in Judah. They went into the country of Moab and remained there. But Elimelech, the husband of Naomi, died, and she was left with her two sons. These took Moabite wives; the name of the one was Orpah and the name of the other Ruth. They lived there about ten years, and both Mahlon and Chilion died, so that the woman was left without her two sons and her husband.
Then she arose with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab, for she had heard in the fields of Moab that the Lord had visited his people and given them food. So she set out from the place where she was with her two daughters-in-law, and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. But Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go, return each of you to her mother's house. May the Lord deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me. The Lord grant that you may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband!” Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept.
                 Ruth 1:1-9

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

My Listening
We come to a new book today. The first nine verses of the book of Ruth is terrible. Just like Job, any bad thing you can imagine happened to Naomi! Who could she turn to? Where could she go?

Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:

Naomi's story parallels Job's. Blow after blow has devastated her life. She had married with such high hopes of her and Elimelek's making the farm work and raising a family, and she has lost her farm, her extended family, her homeland, her husband, and her sons, and she is left alone in this foreign country with two foreign daughters-in-law.
Then she hears that the famine is over. For the first time, the story mentions God. Throughout, it will be reticent about doing so. It parallels the way we experience our lives, recognizing the importance of coincidences and of human initiatives that you can see, and believing that God is involved behind the scenes…

John Goldingay. Joshua, Judges and Ruth for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.164-165.

Have you experienced that before? How did you get out of that misery?Where was God at that time?

This is a story to tell us when everything falls apart the only way for us to look for and to look at is God Himself. There is no way out except God and God will make a way for you if you are willing to look for Him, look at Him and follow Him.

    Dear Lord Jesus,
Open our eyes to be able to see you especially in those times when everything falls apart. Lead us to experience that you are our Provider. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
    1. Have you experienced that before? How did you get out of that misery?Where was God at that time?

2. Where is God now? How intimate are you with God lately?

3. What have you got from Jesus today?
