Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!
How vast is the sum of them!
If I would count them, they are more than the sand.
I awake, and I am still with you.
                    Psalm 139:17-18

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

“Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

"Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (Ruth 1:9-19a)

15 And she said, “See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.” 16 But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. 17 Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.” 18 And when Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more. 19 So the two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem.
                 Ruth 1:15-19a

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

My Listening
What kind of character was Naomi be to make Ruth wanted to follow her God and her? What kind of love and faith did Ruth saw and experienced to lead her follow Naomi no matter what?

Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:

It is impossible to guess why she should make this commitment. Naomi herself is pushing her away. Naomi's people is a people that looks down on Ruth's people. Naomi's God is the one Naomi has seen abandoning her and Ruth and Orpah. Yet this God is the one Ruth appeals to in her oath of allegiance to Naomi.

John Goldingay. Joshua, Judges and Ruth for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.169.

Do you think you have that kind of life that people can see Jesus in you and follow you just like Ruth was so willing to follow Naomi?

Is there anything that blocks your relationship with Jesus that people can't see Jesus in you? Do not want to follow you?

    Dear Lord Jesus,
Open our eyes to see those things that are blocking us so that people can't see you in us and do not want to follow us. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
1. Do you think you have that kind of life that people can see Jesus in you and follow you just like Ruth was so willing to follow Naomi?

2. Is there anything that blocks your relationship with Jesus that people can't see Jesus in you? Do not want to follow you?

3. What have you got from Jesus today?
