OT DAY 426 - God Says, "That's it. I'm outta here." (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

       Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
        Praise your God, O Zion!
        For he strengthens the bars of your gates;
            he blesses your children within you.
         He makes peace in your borders;
             he fills you with the finest of the wheat.

                    Psalm 147:12-14

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

     “Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

     "Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (1 Samuel 7:15-8:20)

       Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. And the Lord said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.”
                                 1   Samuel 8: 5-9

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

My Listening

          Yesterday we had a terrible question to ask "Do you reject God from being King over you?" What is your answer?

          It is so sad that the Israelites had come to this stage that God said they rejected Him as King and yet God allowed them to do what they wanted to do. Why?

Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:

           When the people now say they want a human king and thus implicitly reject God as king, one might have expected God to tell Samuel, "So do not yield to their request. Tell them I intend to reign over them." Yet one of the terrible aspects of the way God runs the world is sometimes to give us what we ask for. To put it the way Paul does in Romans 1, God gives us up to the desires of our hearts, to a debased mind. So as an act of judgment God says, "Okay, give them what they ask for." Their request is not a strange aberration. It is in keeping with the way they have related to God since they came out of Egypt. So this is a moment at which God says, "That's it. That's the last straw. No more long-suffering. I'm outta here."

         That's the consequence of insisting on your own way to do things! Do you want God to tell you, "That's it. I'm outta here."

Dear Lord Jesus,
    Help us to be willing to follow you each day so that you won't say that to us that you will be out and no more with us.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
    1. Do you think God really would say that to you? Why YES? Why NO?

2. How can you avoid that to happen?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?
