Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

“Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

"Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (1 Samuel 12:16-25)

16 Now therefore stand still and see this great thing that the Lord will do before your eyes. 17 Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call upon the Lord, that he may send thunder and rain. And you shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the Lord, in asking for yourselves a king.” 18 So Samuel called upon the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain that day, and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel.
19 And all the people said to Samuel, “Pray for your servants to the Lord your God, that we may not die, for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for ourselves a king.” 20 And Samuel said to the people, “Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. Yet do not turn aside from following the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. 21 And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty. 22 For the Lord will not forsake his people, for his great name's sake, because it has pleased the Lord to make you a people for himself. 23 Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way. 24 Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you. 25 But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king.”
                                                                 1   Samuel 12: 16-25

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

My Listening

Today's passage shows how the Israelites knew that their sins were beyond what they could bear, so they asked Samuel to pray for them. And Samuel replied to them that he would surely pray for them even though Samuel was so sad about their rebelliousness.

Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:

We often think of prophets as people who bring God's word to the people, and we think of priests as people who bring the people's offerings to God. But prophets are involved in a two-way mediation; being a prophet means taking part in the meetings of the heavenly cabinet, and this involves a responsibility to represent your people in those meetings as well as a responsibility to tell the people about the decisions it has taken. Priests are also involved in a two-way mediation. As the story of Hannah and Eli shows, they bring God's word to people as well as bringing their offerings to God, but in bringing people's offerings priests also bring the prayers and praises of which the offerings are an outward expression.

May be you think that you are neither a prophet nor a priest, so today's passage has nothing to do with you.

What I received from Jesus to you today is that Jesus is inviting you to become a man or woman of prayer. There is nothing more important for you to aware that every disciple of Jesus need to become a man or woman of prayer.

You need to join the weekly or daily Prayer Meeting of your church to learn to pray and to pray in unity. You need to pray as often as you can and to experience the sweetness of your time with Abba and the power of prayer.

          Are you willing?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to be willing to become a man or woman of prayer. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
    1. How important it is for you to become a man or woman of prayer?

2. Do you think Jesus is calling you now to become a man or woman of prayer? How do you respond to Jesus's call?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?
