OT DAY 510 - "Don't Quit" Rule No. 6: Just Believe, Do Not Fear (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

      The Lord is the strength of his people;
he is the saving refuge of his anointed.
Oh, save your people and bless your heritage!
Be their shepherd and carry them forever.
                                     Psalm 28:8-9

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

“Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

"Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (1 Kings 19:9-14)

15 And the Lord said to him, “Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus. And when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael to be king over Syria. 16 And Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint to be king over Israel, and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint to be prophet in your place. 17 And the one who escapes from the sword of Hazael shall Jehu put to death, and the one who escapes from the sword of Jehushall Elisha put to death. 18 Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”
                                         1 Kings 19:15-18

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

At last God spoke to Elijah! If you were Elijah, would you feel relief, excited or worried?

Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:
     (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :
God has a new, threefold commission for Elijah. One aspect of it is that he is to anoint a new king of Ephraim in place of Ahab. This is not very surprising. Ahab has clearly tested God's long-suffering to destruction, and God is going to repeat the pattern with which we have become familiar. God had commissioned a prophet to tell Jeroboam he was to terminate Rehoboam's authority in Ephraim, had told Jeroboam's wife he intended to terminate the rule of Jeroboam's household there, and had commissioned a prophet to tell Baasha that his number was also up. Now God commissions the anointing of the first king in yet another line.
Either side of that anointing, however, are two more surprising anointings. First there is to be a new king in Aram, the area to the northeast approximately equivalent to modern Syria. This act of Elijah signifies that Yahweh is not merely a local god with power in Israel. Yahweh is God on the international scale. It is a conviction that will be central to the teaching of later prophets. The way history works out relates to what God is doing with Israel. The bad news in the present context is that Aram is to be a chief troubler of Israel for a century or two.
Further, Elijah is to anoint Elisha as his successor. This is also odd, because prophets do not get anointed. Anointing is a ceremony whereby the community sets apart a priest or a king and designates him as having been given authority by God. Only here and in Isaiah 61 is there reference to a prophet's being anointed.

John Goldingay. 1 and 2 Kings for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.91-92.

So, what God commanded Elijah's three things were all odd and strange. But, there is nothing in the Bible telling us that Elijah was in doubt, worry, discouraged or anger. Actually the reason for Elijah to run is his fear to be killed. Then, the first thing God told him is to go back the way he came. Why all the fear was away and Elijah could go back and willing to do those odd things God commanded him to do?

The answer is very simple. Whenever you experience these six rules of not quitting, you won't be controlled by fear and you will have the courage to do anything God wants you to do!

Now, you have learned all six rules, are you ready to try that yourself?
How about try to listen to someone who God appointed to do something for God first. No matter it is to start your first tithing, fasting, 6:30a.m. Prayer Meeting, Copying the Bible, going to a mission trip or anything you think God invites you to do.

    Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to experience the power of these six rules of not quitting so that we can be used by you to do your Kingdom ministry. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
    1. How can these six rules help you to listen to God's voice?

2. Are you able to do God's Kingdom ministry after experiencing these six rules?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?
