We used to say that sinners won't repent even facing death. But, here we have a situation that a sinner repents. Would it be too late for a wicked sinner as Ahab to repent in the very last moment?
Elijah does not bid him to repent and gives no hint that he has any way of escaping the judgment that Elijah declares to be imminent. But the story presupposes something fundamental about the way prophecy works. When God declares that something is about to happen, it doesn't mean it has to happen; everything depends on the way people respond to what God says. In some sense Elijah's words bring Ahab to his senses, and this gives God the excuse to be merciful, which is always God's preference…
Ahab's repentance does not undo the attitudes and practices that Ahab and his predecessors have tolerated and encouraged in Ephraim. These will continue, and judgment will eventually come on Ahab's household (we will read about this in 2 Kings 9). The implication is not that the son will be punished for the father's sins irrespective of the son's stance. If the son repents, then the prophecy can be rescinded again. But the acts of parents tend to shape their children, and it is in this sense that the parents' sins are visited on their children.

The scary thing is that Ahab's repentance is just for a short while and he did nothing to undo the sins he and his ancestors led the Israelites to do. Then, the most horrible thing is that his son will follow his sin.
It is never too late to repent. But, only true repentance!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to repent daily so that we can do what you command us to do and not do what you command us not to do. Lead us to be able to help more people to do so. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

1. What have you learned from Ahab's repentance?
2. Do you know your sins will affect your sons and daughters and might go on for generations? How are you going to do so that your children and children's children will be blessed?
