OT DAY 508 - "Don't Quit" Rule No. 4: Meet God after 40 Days (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

      The Lord is my strength and my shield;
          in him my heart trusts, and I am helped;
          my heart exults,
          and with my song I give thanks to him.
                                     Psalm 28:7

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

     “Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

     "Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (1 Kings 19:8)

And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God.
                                         1 Kings 19:8

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

    My Listening

    What is Rule No. 4? After Elijah's sleep, eat and drink, he fasted for forty days and traveled forty days to meet God, the same place Moses met God.

    Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:
     (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :
            At some point Elijah becomes set on traveling through the wilderness for another week or so to get to where God had long ago appeared to Moses. It is the only occasion in the Bible when someone makes such a pilgrimage. God intends to deal with him there and sustains him, so as to be able to do so. On almost any theory of the location of Mount Sinai or Mount Horeb (both names are used in the Old Testament) it wouldn't take a literal forty days to get there, but it sounds like a symbolic number, and it was the time Moses himself spent on Mount Sinai.

John Goldingay. 1 and 2 Kings for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2011, p.90-91.

            Have you taken that forty days to meet God? With fasting too?
            Actually I helped quite a number of people to break their bad habits like smoking, gambling and pornography. I told them if they could stop that sinful lifestyle for forty days and they had a better chance to get rid of that forever. Almost all of them stop their bad habit after that forty days.

             I helped quite a number of people to build a lifestyle of Chrislikeness like forty days of non-stop daily devotion, fasting or coming to our daily morning prayer. Almost all of them successfully build up their lifestyle after that forty days.

             That's how God tested Elijah and Moses! That's how God tests you and me! So, are you going to start a non-stop forty days daily devotion? Are you going to come to our morning prayer for forty days non-stop? If you can do so, I am very sure that you can meet God in a very special way! God commanded me many, many times of this "forty days" invitation. Each time I listen and obey, I have a better and closer relationship with God and be abel to listen to Him more easily and to act on His command more naturally.

    Dear Lord Jesus,
    Help us to follow Elijah's example to use forty days to be ready to meet you.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
    1. Do you think that forty days is really so important to break or build?

2. Are you willing to try your forty days no matter daily devotion, fasting, going to daily worship or anything God invites you to do so?

    3. What have you got from Jesus today?
