Bible Study

After Paul claims his authority as a true apostle of Christ and the authentic meaning of the Gospel in the last passage, here in this passage, he tells the Galatians how wrong he was. Bishop N. T. Wright thinks that Paul follows Elijah's route to call down fire to cleanse those who derail what those Jews believe as in Moses law.

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
Paul saw himself, it seems, as a latter-day Elijah, cleansing Israel of the horrible nonsense about Jesus of Nazareth, who couldn't have been the Messiah because he was crucified, and who certainly couldn't be worshipped because in any case the Messiah wouldn't be divine...
Elijah, dejected and depressed, went off to Mount Sinai to meet his God afresh, to learn about the still small voice as well as the earthquake, wind and fire.  Saul of Tarsus went off, probably to Sinai (he says 'Arabia', which is where Sinai was), most likely for a similar private wrestling with the God whom he worshipped.  This God, to Saul's horror and amazement, had now revealed his son, and had done so in order that he, Saul, an ultra-orthodox Jew, might tell the pagan nations that Israel's God loved them just as much as he loved Israel.

N.T. Wright. Paul for Everyone:Galatians and Thessalonians. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.8-9.

You may be doing the same thing as Saul did thinking that you have tried all your best to help your church to fight against those who oppose what you think is wrong. But, is there a slight chance that you have got it all wrong just like Saul? How can you be so sure that what you are doing is what Jesus tells you to do?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

Spiritual Journal

What I heard from Jesus today is: I have got it all wrong!

What I got from Jesus today is what Saul and many Christian leaders including me say at least several times in our lifetime. Saul got it all wrong and that is a fact! The three years just like Elijah and Mose in Sinai turns everything around and Paul becomes Paul and not Saul anymore.

When is that time for you in Sinai that you have a personal time of reflection, repentance, transformation and renewal that you are getting it right and you are sure by that? If you are not so sure, please do not destroy God's work like what Saul did, please!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to cherish our personal time with you that we can be sure that we have not got it all wrong. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
