Bible Study

Paul leads us to think of a very important issue. What is the true identity of a Christian? For a Jew, it has to be the circumcision and more, like keeping the Sabbaths, not eating pork and certain foods. But, how about for a Christian?

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
The cross of Jesus and the gift of the spirit mean that God has dealt with the problem that stood in the way of the blessing reaching out into the world, and embracing Israel as well as it did so.

N.T. Wright. Paul for Everyone:Galatians and Thessalonians. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.34.

Bishop Lesslie Newbigin says in a classic must-read book on Mission: The Open Secret- An Introduction to the Theology of Mission:
The decisive mark of membership in the new community was nothing definable in terms of culture;  it was a reality - apparently quite unmistakable - recognized as the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Lessilie Newbigin. The Open Secret: An Introduction to the Theology of Mission. Grand Rapids, Michigan: William Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1995, p.155.

So, do you know what is the true identity of a true Christian now?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

The title I heard from Jesus today is: Where is your Christian passport?

What I got from Jesus today is a question that we all need to know. For Paul, Bishop N.T. Wright and Bishop Newbegin, the true identity of a Christian is not circumcision, not even some kinds of spiritual gifts as those Corinthians boast, but the presence of the Holy Spirit.

You tell me that you are a Christian, fine. My question is do you have the presence of the Holy Spirit in you that you can live out the gift of the Holy Spirit so naturally each day.

Your Christian passport is not your certificate of Baptism or any kind of special gifts or power. No! Your Christian passport is the presence of the Holy Spirit, that Jesus is in you, Jesus is your Lord, and that everyone can recognize.

Do you have your Christian passport?

Come Holy Spirit, come,
Fill us each day that we can be able to experience your presence in us. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
