Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

         I will sing of steadfast love and justice;
to you, O Lord, I will make music.
                          Psalm 101:1

Confession and Repentance

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

“Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

"Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (Deuteronomy 19:14-20:15)

English(ESV): https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy 20&version=ESV

“When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots and an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt. And when you draw near to the battle, the priest shall come forward and speak to the people and shall say to them, ‘Hear, O Israel, today you are drawing near for battle against your enemies: let not your heart faint. Do not fear or panic or be in dread of them, for the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.’ Then the officers shall speak to the people, saying, ‘Is there any man who has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man dedicate it. And is there any man who has planted a vineyard and has not enjoyed its fruit? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man enjoy its fruit. And is there any man who has betrothed a wife and has not taken her? Let him go back to his house, lest he die in the battle and another man take her.’ And the officers shall speak further to the people, and say, ‘Is there any man who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go back to his house, lest he make the heart of his fellows melt like his own.’ And when the officers have finished speaking to the people, then commanders shall be appointed at the head of the people.

                   Deuteronomy 20:1-9

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

My Listening

Today's passage talks about how to go to a war if you have to face it. The commands that God gives is very unusual.

Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :

The people in charge of war making are not the generals but the priests and the community leaders. Indeed, the community leaders appoint the generals. When battle is imminent, the priests come and give the army a pep talk; then the community leaders come and give all sorts of people the opportunity to excuse themselves and go home. Home building, the development of the farm, and marriage have priority over war. Anybody who is scared can go home too! On the other hand, the basis on which you decide whether you can undertake war is not whether you think you can win. It's the fact that you know God is with you. You know this is what will make the difference, not your rational assessment of your weaponry and that of your enemies. When the army is about to attack a city, it first proclaims peace to it.

John Goldingay. Numbers & Deuteronomy for Everyone. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2010, p.160-161.

What do you think? Do you think there is a single nation nowadays using any of the strategy from this passage to go to war? But, that's how God commands His people. The key is "You know that God is with you". That's the way to win a war, no matter it is a spiritual warfare or a war.
When you make a major decision, are you sure that God is with you? That's the key!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to be sure that you are with us each day that we can be able to face anything, even warfare.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
1. What do you think of today's passage about going to war? Why God commands His people to go to war like that? Can they really win with this strategy?

2. What kind of inspiration can you receive from today's message?

Praise and Thanksgiving
