Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence

Confession and Repentance

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

     “Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

     "Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

13 “If any man takes a wife and goes in to her and then hates her 14 and accuses her of misconduct and brings a bad name upon her, saying, ‘I took this woman, and when I came near her, I did not find in her evidence of virginity,’ 15 then the father of the young woman and her mother shall take and bring out the evidence of her virginity to the elders of the city in the gate. 16 And the father of the young woman shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man to marry, and he hates her; 17 and behold, he has accused her of misconduct, saying, “I did not find in your daughter evidence of virginity.” And yet this is the evidence of my daughter's virginity.’ And they shall spread the cloak before the elders of the city. 18 Then the elders of that city shall take the man and whip him, 19 and they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought a bad name upon a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife. He may not divorce her all his days. 20 But if the thing is true, that evidence of virginity was not found in the young woman, 21 then they shall bring out the young woman to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done an outrageous thing in Israel by whoring in her father's house. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.

22 “If a man is found lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman. So you shall purge the evil from Israel.

My Listening

      Today's passage talks about sex. When sex goes wrong, the Israelites have to deal with it in God's way.  

Let's see how Professor John Goldingay tells us:

     The nature of village life is the background of Deuteronomy's rules relating to when sex goes wrong. As is the case in many societies, virginity matters, so if a man regrets the marriage he has undertaken and wants an excuse to get rid of his wife, then he might think of accusing her of not having been a virgin. Deuteronomy 22 protects her. He cannot simply accuse her and throw her out. He has to prove it, a tough challenge…
     The subsequent rules about sex also offer a woman some protection and a man some deterrence. There is no double standard about adultery: the same sanction applies to the man as to the woman. (This rule is a good illustration of how one cannot infer from the rules how life actually was; the Old Testament records no instances of adulterers being executed.)

      From how God commands the Israelites to deal with when sex goes wrong, we know that it is a serious matter,it evil. Sex is good and a blessing only within a marriage. Our modern society teaches people lots of wrong concepts: 
Virginity is nothing now and according to some statistics, most people have sex before they get marry. People believe in joy of sex can be a one night stand! Adultery happens everywhere with no consequence! Pornography is now becoming a lifestyle to many people and not sinful and evil!

     What has that to do with you? Are you going to join this kind of sinful life thinking that it is OK, it is not evil. Or, are you going to obey God's command not stepping into all kinds of "sex traps"! Satan knows how to tailor-made those traps for you. Once you are trapped, you would live in darkness, your marriage would be over and your relationship with God would be cut off.

      You have a choice! Don't let sex goes wrong! 

Dear Lord Jesus, 
Help us to know that you bless husbands and wives to have good sex but forbid people to misuse sex. Lead us to be with you each day that we won't step into those sex traps tailor-made by Satan to destroy our lives.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
1. Do you agree with today's message that when sex goes wrong it will bring destruction?

2. How can you live within the boundary of marriage to enjoy sex not letting it to go wrong?
