Today's passage tells us about the role of John the Baptist as well as our role as a true disciple of Jesus.
N.T. Wright says:
Hence John's agenda: 'a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins'. John was doing what the prophet Isaiah had said: preparing a pathway for the Lord himself to return to his people. This was the time. Rescue was at hand...
John uses a picture which Jesus developed later. The tree is meant to bear fruit, but if it doesn't it will be cut down (Luke 6:43-45). The fruit must show that repentance has been genuine. The warning echoes down the years, and must be taken to heart by all the baptized today.
If you say you have repent and return to Jesus, having a good relationship with Him enjoying His Kingdom work, what kind of fruit can you show to Jesus today?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

What I heard from Jesus today is: Produce fruit in keeping with repentance!
What I received today from Jesus is another reality check after yesterday's test. The question is very simple: Are you producing fruit for Jesus?
If you have repent, how much fruit have you produced? How many souls have you saved?
If you are having a lifestyle of Christlikeness, how much fruit have you produced? How many souls have you saved?
Don't deceive yourself if you can't produce fruit in keeping with your repentance!
Well, if you want to produce fruit, then John the Baptist is a good model for you to learn and imitate. Prepare the way for the Lord just like what John did and you will be fruitful, much fruitful!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be able to produce fruit in keeping with our repentance and willing to follow John the Baptist's example to be a true disciple of you. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
