Bible Study

Today's passage records how did Jesus lived out what he read in the synagogue of his home town as we discussed yesterday.

     N.T. Wright says:
He was 'the son of God', here in the sense of 'the Messiah'.  He was God's anointed.  The Lord's Spirit was indeed resting on him, as he said at Nazareth, to release the oppressed, to give sight to the blind, to unloose the chains of the prisoners.

So, where did Jesus' authority and power come from? N.T. Wright says:
He just told the spirits to go, and they went.  That was what astonished people.  He didn't have to summon up stronger powers than his own; he just used the authority he already possessed in himself.  and, as this passage makes clear, he did the same with 'ordinary' diseases as well.

Jesus authority and power comes from God's anointing, no secret and so simple.  Where does your authority and power come from if you have any?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

Spiritual Journal

What I heard from Jesus today is: Where does your authority and power come from?

What I received today from Jesus is a spiritual check-up of how close are we with Jesus and have we received the anointing from the Holy Spirit. The closer you are with Jesus, the more anointing you have.

That's why some people can exercise their spiritual authority and power but other can't. Some people can drive out demons, heal the sick and do what is being described in Isaiah 61:1 to release the oppressed, to give sight to the blind, to unloose the chains of the prisoners. To me, it's not only the anointing we receive, it's the authority and power of Jesus who is within us, besides us and before us. The more you are closer to Jesus, the more you are being filled by the Holy Spirit, the more you are freshly anointed and the more you can experience Jesus' authority and power.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to experience your authority and power that we can live a life of victory.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
