Bible Study

Paul solved the problem of whether Christians can eat the food sacrificed to idols teaching them that we have the 'freedoms' and 'rights' to do or not do that in chapter 8. Here in this chapter, Paul wanted to clarify what he meant in chapter 8 in case some strong Christians misused their 'freedoms' and 'rights' to do anything they wanted to by returning to their old lifestyle of paganism doing four things:
1. Idolatry
Paul uses Exodus 32:6 to warn them not going back to the kind of sexual orgy paganism did in the old time as well as in their time.

2. Sexual immorality
Paul uses Numbers 25 to warn them not going back to the horrible large-scale orgies with Moabite women that cause the death of 24,000 people.

3.  Testing whether God is capable of looking after them
Paul uses Numbers 21 to warn them not acting like those Israelites to test God that they were attacked by serpents as a punishment from God.

4.  Not to grumble
Paul uses the deadly consequence of grumbling in the book of Exodus and Paul's message in Philippians 2:14 to warn them not to grumble against God including exercising their 'freedoms' and 'rights' to go back to Egypt doing their old sinful lifestyle.

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
Paul has agreed in principle that the food offered to an idol is no better or worse than any other...but the real issue for him is whether the 'strong' Christians in Corinth, who insist on their rights and freedoms and look down on those with tender consciences, are going to find themselves drawn back into paganism itself...
The 'freedom' which comes within the now-appearing new age can be confused with the 'licence' that drags you back into the old.  This produces times of testing, in which there is no room for pride.

Wow! Why those kinds of things could happen to the so called spiritual strong Christians in Corinth? One word - PRIDE. There is no room for pride if you want to become a true disciple of Christ. There is no room!

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: No room for pride

What I got from Jesus today is a warning to all of us of our pride. Our pride could lead us back to the road of disobedience. Our pride could elevate us to be the lord of ourself also lording many people under our care. In fact, the reality is we allow PRIDE to lord us rather than Jesus as our Lord.

Because of our pride we might go back to the old route committing all those four kinds of sins. Pride pulls us into various kinds of temptation that we step deeper and deeper into darkness.

If we trust God is always faithful and we allow Jesus to lead us, we can be able to see the way out to go back to His mighty Kingdom.

It is so sad that I have seen so many cases that because of pride even top Christian leaders are being drawn into the sinful, dark and dirty "black hole" of anger, bitterness, insecure, hate, unholy, self-centred and greed. There is no way out when we allow PRIDE to lord our life! Jesus is Lord is the only way out!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to understand that there is no room for pride in our life. Help us to be a humble and faithful servant of you Lord Jesus.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
