Bible Study

Today's passage is talking about how we can honour each others as part on the body of Christ.

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
Paul insists on equality between different functions, leaving no room for social, cultural or 'spiritual' elitism or snobbery within the church...
Paul clearly has the life of the local congregation in mind. He wants every Christian in Corinth to value every other Christian, and to care for him or her, just like the hand comes to bandage the injured foot, or the foot hurries to take the injured head to hospital.

N.T. Wright. Paul for Everyone:1 Corinthians. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.163.

So, do you feel you are the elite in your church looking down on other people? How do you value every member of your church as part of the same and one body, the body of Christ?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: Disciples build up, dogs and pigs break down!

What I got from Jesus today is an invitation for all of us to build up the body of Christ but not break down. Paul was trying to deal with those who boasted and broke the body of Christ. Do you think those Corinthians would listen?

I have seen too many cases the past 25 years of my priestly life that no matter how you value people, help people, build up people, there are sad examples that they do not listen but keep on their way of hurting you and breaking the body of Christ. I have seen too many disappointments happening all around and lots of time I just do not understand how that can happen. Every time when that happened to me, it just broke my heart! Why Christians choose not to build but to break the body of Christ.

Jesus gives me one verse today to understand what is really happening:

“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you."  Matthew 7:6

Have you experienced this situation before? If you have, you know what I mean. If you don't, you will sooner or later!

So, lets be faithful disciples of Christ to love each others, build up each others in order to build up the body of Christ. On the other hand, if there are really people like what Jesus describes as dogs and pigs, we have to be very careful to deal with those people in order not to get hurt, also we can protect the body of Christ from getting hurt. It needs discernment and courage. Lots of discernment and courage!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be your true and faithful disciples to love your people and to build up your body.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
