Bible Study

In the last passage, Paul warned those who misused the 'freedoms' and 'rights' to go back to idol worship thinking that it was alright. Here, in this passage, Paul talked about Christians could eat anything sold in the meat-market. But, most of the meat in the market had been offered to the idols. Is Paul contradicting his own view?

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
In verses 14-22 Paul was quite clear that Christians should not go near idol-worship.  No eating in temples, then.  Now he says you may buy and eat anything sold in the meat-market.  That's the difference: as one recent writer puts it, it's the difference between venue and menu. The place is off limits, the food isn't.
The great conclusion sums up everything a Christian needs to know about a holy life before the watching world.  Whatever you do, do it to God's glory!

N.T. Wright. Paul for Everyone:1 Corinthians. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.137.

So, what have you got from today's message? Do you think you have misused your freedom and right to doing things not to God's glory? Have you done anything recently setting a bad example to the others and so not to God's glory?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: Whatever you do, do it for God's glory!

What I got from Jesus today is a calling to follow some good example of God's servants. We need to be aware that the end of this passage should be 11:1 and not 10:33. Why? Because everything Paul said points to call people to follow his example.

Is it difficult for us as leaders to set good examples to other people to follow so that they can do everything for God's glory? Sometimes we allow our anger, insecurity, bitterness, self-centerness to take control of us hurting other people. Yes, you have the freedoms and rights to do anything but watch out, because whatever you do, you need to do for God's glory.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be able to do everything for your glory. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
