Bible Study

Today's passage talks about spiritual gifts. N.T. Wright uses an example of an orchestra. Various instruments, different sections, but combining together giving out wonderful music.

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
The problem Paul now confronts in Corinth is that within the Christian orchestra there were some who considered themselves superior to others, and there was a danger as a result that the whole symphony might be played out of balance and even out of tune...
In verses 4,5 and 6 Paul does something striking...At the very moment when he's wanting to say that the various gifts that different Christians have are all to be seen within a unity, the unity which is God himself, he expresses that unity in three closely related ways: spirit, Lord and God... from this point there is a straight line into the explorations of the Trinity that later theologians would undertake...
The Corinthians were in danger of looking at spirituality as an area of personal growth and experience.  Paul wants them to see it as the place where the one true God, known in the three ways he outlines in verses 4-6, equips people to advance his kingdom in the face of the principalities and powers of the world.

N.T. Wright. Paul for Everyone:1 Corinthians. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.154, 155, 157.

Do you know as you proclaim Jesus as Lord, He has given you certain spiritual gifts? How do you recognize those gifts and how do you exercise those gifts? Have you made the mistake like Paul says to cause an imbalance and out of tune situation? Or you and others in your church are balanced and in tune? How can you be more balanced and in tune?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

Spiritual Journal

What I heard from Jesus today is: The power of love is not by talking

What I got from Jesus today is a call for us to stop what we are talking now and to pray. Because we can not acquire those spiritual gifts by mere talking. Actually what I receive from Jesus now is a follow-up thought of yesterday's theme: Breaking yourself to pieces in order to give.

Jesus because of His love he broke Himself to pieces so that He can save us and that the Holy Spirit anoints us with various spiritual gifts. It is somewhat like breaking of a super huge size communion wafer giving to many people. Each one has a piece, and then how about asking them to come back to put their pieces into the proper place so that the whole wafer resume its original oneness. That's how we receive spiritual gifts from the Holy Spirit to build up our own church and then beyond.

Now the talking is over. You need to pray for the Holy Spirit to come anointing you with those gifts. This is how the power of love operates and how we can experience and exercise. And, the power of love is not by talking, it is by giving and experiencing.

Come Holy Spirit come,
Come and fill me that I can experience the power of your love and can receive your fresh anointing. Come Holy Spirit come. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
