Bible Study

Paul continues this chapter's theme on eating food sacrificed to idols. He reminds those Christians in Corinth that they may not have a problem in eating that kind of food as Paul has no problem himself. But, if that freedom causes some people to fall into severe argument or sins, then they should stop doing that. Because they have become a stumbling block to other people.

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
What Paul insisted on earlier in the chapter was that 'knowledge' puffs you up, but love builds you up; and it's love that he's appealing to now, as part of the foundation of his argument.  You may, he says, have the 'right' to eat meat offered to idols.  He may even be referring to the 'right' that Roman citizens in Corinth possessed to attend great imperial festivities.  But you must be careful in case this 'right' of yours leads you to do things which will lure the 'weak' brother or sister back into the old life.  The language of 'rights' needs to be held up to the light; and the light in which we can see clearly what it should and shouldn't mean is the light of love.

N.T. Wright. Paul for Everyone:1 Corinthians. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2004, p.100.

Do you have this problem that sometimes you have become a stumbling block to the weak because of your strong stand on something not a big deal?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: Don't become a stumbling block to the weak

What I got from Jesus today is a reminder that lots of time we don't aware that we have become a stumbling block. What was the last time you insist on something causing severe argument in your family, church or working place? What fruit it brings if you insist on something which is not a big deal? Who wins?

Don't become a stumbling block to the weak. It is love that we can enjoy a blessed life, a blessed family, a blessed church, a blessed community, a blessed nation and a blessed world.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be able to love so that we won't become a stumbling block to the weak.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
