Bible Study

Paul's point in today's passage is not easy to understand. "Free from everything, and now a slave to everyone" (Verse 19). How can that be?

To explain the two situation in verse 20:
1. Paul was free of everything and he did not need to go to the synagogue taking part in the prayers and liturgy. But, he kept on doing that.
2. Paul was free of everything and he did not need to keep the sabbaths and the food-laws. He, he kept on doing that.
Why? Because he wanted to save more people.

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
Paul's overall point is to make them see that Christian freedom is not freedom to do what you like, but freedom from all the things that stop you being the person God really wants you to be, which is freedom for the service of God and the gospel...
Paul's rights, his freedoms, are as nothing; what matters is whether people are being won for God, being saved from the corrupting wickedness around and within them, being rescued from darkness and brought into the light...
Paul's message is that the messenger who must swallow his pride, who must give up his rights, who must change his freedom into slavery.

Is this too difficult for you to understand? Are you a free person after you received Jesus as your Lord? Are you willing to let Jesus to be your Lord lording you? Really?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: True freedom! Free!

What I got from Jesus today is a call to let Him lording our lives. That is to say:
1. We are not truly free because we have Jesus lording us.
2. We need to be willing to be enslaved to everyone so that our Lord Jesus Christ can use our enslavement to save more people.

There are times we don't want to do something or don't want to be with some people. But, because of our daily intimate personal relationship with Jesus we receive a kind of "order" from Jesus that we need to do something we don't like to do or meet some people we don't want to see and we are willing to do that. THAT IS TRUE FREEDOM!

So, do you have anything you don't want to do and anyone you don't want to see but Jesus is urging you to do and to meet with now?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to experience true freedom in you that we are willing to be lorded by you.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
