Bible Study

Paul continues with the issue of speaking in tongues.  It is not that he is against speaking in tongues. In fact, he clearly states that he has the gift of speaking in tongues. His point is that it is useless if people just don't understand what they are speaking. It brings to a practical point we need to think of beyond speaking in tongues.

Bishop N.T. Wright says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright ) :
What Paul says here is relevant to much wider issues than simply speaking in tongues - and hence to many churches which don't have the same problem that the Corinthians had.  What is the point, for instance, of choosing hymn-tunes which may be musically very fine and sophisticated but which the average congregation can't sing?  What is the point of reading scripture in such a mannered or 'elevated' tone of voice that, instead of it being heard as the exciting, life-changing word it really is, it comes across as a lofty oracle, very grand perhaps but totally unrelated to the ordinary life of the listeners? 'You might as well be speaking into thin air,' says Paul in verse 9.

Have you been using your spiritual gifts wrongly that you are just speaking into thin air?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

What I heard from Jesus today is: What's the use if nobody understands?

What I got from Jesus today is a question of how effective we are to use our gifts. There are so many examples I can give to name the problem.

If you are a singspiration leader, what good it is if nobody knows the song you choose? What is good if only you or your worship team sing and most people listen or looking around? Why can't you choose those songs that are more familiar to other people?

If you are a preacher, what good it is that nobody understand what you say and that they can't adapt what you say into their lives?

If you are a teacher, what good it is to teach your students those things they do not understand or cannot understand?

Have I made my point clear?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be able to choose things that people can understand and enjoy. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
