Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome." Genesis 32: 28
What I received from Jesus today is: How do you overcome your struggles?
Two hours ago Michelle and I were watching TV and she said, "Why we have to take so many examination papers? You are always so calm facing with those examination papers, I am not able to do that!" She was referring to the difficult situation we are facing recently of the future of the Anglican Mission.
Jacob was facing with more serious situation than what we are now. He was "in great fear and distress" (v. 7) for he did not know whether his brother Esau was going to kill him or not. What I received from Jesus today from Jacob's situation is: The biggest crisis of your life is the best challenge you ever have before!
That was the wrestle and struggling Jacob was having with the angle. Many people failed in these kind of severe life struggle and got depression, unable to sleep, feeling insecure, angry, full of bitterness, great fear, hopeless and lifeless. But if we win the struggle then we are refreshed, energized, spirit-filled, joyful, peaceful, good sleep, secure, smile, sweetness of life, courageous, hopeful and vibrant!
I see the angle as a wrestling coach from God to help Jacob to get over with his great fear and distress so that he could be a new man, a powerful leader, father of Israelites!
Well, you have a better chance to overcome your struggle now because you have Jesus to help you to get through. I think Jacob was on his own but God credited his effort by giving him a new name to be the father of a new nation!
So, how do you overcome your struggles?
Dear Lord Jesus,
We are really very weak and unable to get through those great fear and distress. Come and help us to overcome our struggles. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
**Four days ago(Sunday) Michelle and I were having lunch with our church choir members. Our Music Director, Edmund Cheung said, "Silas, I understand what you said about the best thing in last night's Schola Cantorum Emmanuel's concert was "life". I really experienced a powerful outburst of life in all of us when we sang especially when we sang "Hallelujah" and "Worthy is the Lamb/ Amen"." Yes, it was indeed a powerful concert yesterday night. Please click the two links in this post to listen to how we praise God yesterday. The recording was just taken from a small camera and not a good recording. I'll give you the link of our official recording once Andy Li is done for the whole concert.
When we praise the Lord like that spirit in this psalm we will know the "life" and power right away of the joy we received when we praise Him! All of our Schola members and those who attended yesterday's(Saturday's) concert felt the same way that we were richly blessed when we richly praised our Lord!
Thanks to our son Ignatius who took a wonderful and powerful photo of me capturing the "life" in this concert and with his comment on his face book:
Live fully. Live passionately.
You know that feeling when you do something you love, and time seems to stand still?
It's not quite clear, but you've lost in the moment of it.
Congrats to Schola Cantorum for singing Handel's Messiah today!
