Bible Study

Mark records many occasions in which Jesus drove out demons. In this chapter, Jesus freed this man from the severe satanic oppression. But, the townpeople seemed more concerned about the business losses of those who owned the pigs than they were about the man who had been demon-possessed.

N. T. Wright points out that the focus of this incidence is on one man in deep human distress and need, and on Jesus meeting that need and healing that distress. As part of the healing, Jesus doesn't let the man stay with him. He is not to become dependent on Jesus. He is to stand on his own feet, to find a new life and back in his own community to tell his non-Jewish people what Jesus had done.

Have you experienced or seen this kind of healing before? What kind of healing do you need from Jesus?

Have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to God as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

My Spiritual Journal

What I heard from Jesus today is: Afraid no more!

The theme I got from Jesus today is a kind of continuation from yesterday's theme "Why are you afraid". There are certain levels of "afraid" in these 20 verses;
1. The fear of Jesus' disciples: The darkness, the graveyard and the possessed gave a certain kind of fear level to Jesus' disciples.
2. The fear of the possessed man: his fear of being rejected, his fear of unable to control himself, his fear of going back home, there are so many fear in that man's life that we can never understand, only Jesus can.
3. The fear of those who took care of the 2,000 pigs: fear of how to report to the boss of losing a large sum of money, fear of Jesus power.

Jesus was the only person who had no fear to drive out those demons in that man's soul. The man had no fear after Jesus healed him that he could go home and tell people what Jesus done to him.

When we are healed and freed by Jesus, we have no fear but to proclaim what Jesus has done fearlessly! And, we should fearlessly let Jesus to use us to free other people from the power of darkness!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Thank you for healing us and freeing us from this world's power of darkness into your light and glory. Help us not to be afraid any more that we are able to tell other people of your mighty power. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
