Bible Study

Let's spend some time to read three passages from the Old Testament to understand what is happening with Jesus:
1. According to Deuteronomy 23: 25 people were allowed to pick some heads of grain in this condition:
If you enter your neighbor's grainfield, you may pick kernels with your hands, but you must not put a sickle to his standing grain.

2. King David and his followers ate the consecrated bread
So the priest gave David the consecrated bread, since there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence that had been removed from before the Lord and replaced by hot bread on the day it was taken away. 1 Samuel 21: 6

3. The bread was only for the priests on Sabbath
"This bread is to be set out before the Lord regularly, Sabbath after Sabbath, on behalf of the Israelites, as a lasting covenant. It belongs to Aaron and his sons, who are to eat it in a holy place, because it is a most holy part of their regular share of the offerings made to the Lord by fire." Leviticus 24: 8-9

Jesus doesn't deny that the disciples are breaking the law concerning with traditional sabbath observance, but he pleads special circumstances and scriptural precedent. Jesus points out that the Messiah, the true representative human being, has authority over institutions that might otherwise repress human beings. Jesus was having a messianic claim, a claim that in him the new day should go with his new way.

Then Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."
Mark 2: 27-28

Are you willing to follow Jesus into the new day using his new way? Or, do you insist on sticking firmly to your old tradition?

Have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to God as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

My Spiritual Journal

What I heard from Jesus today is: New day with new way!

Today Jesus continues His challenge to me in the passage yesterday that He comes bringing in the new day. And the most important message is that His new day goes with His new way! We really need to know His new way on this new day and be willing to use His new way.

What is the new way Jesus calls you to do?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to know the new day has come because you are Lord of all. Prepare our lives that we are able to use your new way in this new day. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
