Bible Study

This passage shows us the climax of Jesus' journey.  For His disciples, they thought that the climax of Jesus' journey would be the enthronement of Jesus as their king and the establishment of God's powerful Kingdom, just as king David's time.

     N.T. Wright says:
And the crucifixion was the means by which his kingdom would be established.  As he had said to James and John (20.23), there would come a time when he would indeed be enthroned with one person on his right and another on his left; but the throne he had in mind was the cross.

Notice how, in this passage, parts of the Sermon on the Mount come back into play.  Jesus himself, at last, is struck about the face by the soldiers, and doesn't retaliate (Matthew 5.39).  They take off his outer and inner garments, leaving him naked (Matthew 5:40).  As he is going out to be crucified, the soldiers use their 'right' under Roman law to compel someone to carry a burden for them, just as in Matthew 5.41; only this time the burden in question is the heavy crossbeam on which Jesus will be hung.

Christians love to say that we are willing to follow Jesus. But, do you know where do you follow Jesus to?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

Spiritual Journal

What I heard from Jesus today is: Follow me to the Cross!

What I got from Jesus today is an invitation from Jesus to follow him to the Cross.  Lots of Christians want to follow Jesus to get something, good feeling, security, peace, joy, victory and miracles.  How about I tell you today that if you really want to follow Jesus you may not have those things but to give everything, painful experience, insecure and failure. That was what was happening to Jesus in his climax of life, his crucifixion!

Have you experienced that? Do you know it would happen to you if you really want to follow Jesus.

Jesus wants to say to you, "Follow me to the Cross!" What is your response?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be willing to follow you to the Cross and not to our own victory.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
