Paul concludes last chapter with the results of the two types of slavery. Being enslaved by sin led to eternal death. Being enslaved by righteousness led to eternal life. He starts this chapter with only one result of freedom. The freedom not to be in the old family that the Israelites were in by worshiping Moses law, but to go through the transition to be in the new family of Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Bishop N.T. Wright's says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N._T._Wright):
This chapter forms part of Paul's overall strategy, which is to explain to the Roman Christians, many of whom were clearly from a Jewish background (which is why they 'know the law', as in verse 1), the deep-level transition that has been made through the gospel from the covenant family defined by the law to the covenant family defined by the Messiah and the spirit.  Only if they - and we! - grasp this point will the church be able to understand what God has done and what it now means to share the Christian faith, hope and life.

So, which family are you in? The old family of an institutional church or the new family with Jesus as Lord filled with the Holy Spirit?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

What I heard from Jesus today is: Which family do you belong?

What I got from Jesus today is a very important question to all of us. Are you being enslaved in the old institutional system, family of a church just like what the Israelites or are you in the new family?

The answer is simple. If you have a daily personal relationship with Jesus as your Lord and that you really following Him, listening and obeying to Him, and being filled by the Holy Spirit each day to be able to extend His Kingdom, then you are in the new family. If not, you are still in the old family!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us into your new family that we can enjoy your presence and to do your Kingdom work.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
