Today is Remembrance Day to commemorate the signing of the peace treaty to end World War I ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembrance_Day ). But, human beings never learn from the suffering of wars and there are more wars coming after that, hopefully not World War III!

Today we come to the similar situation of we as human beings never learn those lessons that we need to learn and then change, transform and renewed. We know that Abraham made the same mistake in Genesis 12. He told Pharaoh that Sarai was his sister, nearly making a big mess. He did the same thing here in today's passage. Why? Did Abraham ever learn?

Let's take a look at what Professor John Goldingay says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :

The ploy Abraham tries in Gerar he has already tried in Egypt (Genesis 12), and here he ends up telling us that his action there and here were only two instances of his implementing his regular policy as he moved about! ...His son Isaac will make the same mistake (Genesis 26).

John Goldingay. Genesis for Everyone - Part Two. Louisville,KY: Westminster John Knox Press, 2010, p.34-35.

You must be in great surprise to learn that even Abraham, the father of all nations never learn that big lesson due to his fear and selfishness. The question is, if Abraham could never learn like that, how about you? Are you a teachable disciple of Christ that you can learn from your mistakes?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

The title I heard from Jesus today is: Do you ever learn?

What Jesus wants to give you today is to tell you that if Abraham was so unteachable, you would be also. We always think that we are better than other people and we are teachable and are willing and able to learn.

The fact is, we rarely learn those important lessons Jesus wants us to learn. We know that we need to change, we need to do this, we need to unlearn that, but at the end, nothing change and we always look back, get back to our old habit, old weakness, sins and old route! Sad!

You need to know that if even Abraham could not learn we surely would follow that route of not willing and being able to learn, unless…

Unless we have Jesus as our Lord each day and each minute so that He can help us to learn and lead us to a truly renewed path. If not, we would never learn. Do you agree?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to understand how weak we are as human beings that we need to have you as our Lord and King to lead us each day so that we won't step into Abraham's mess.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
