OT DAY 78 - Bad Parenting (請按此處收聼廣東話Cantonese podcast click here)

Starting from four days days ago we add one important thing to our daily devotion. We start our devotion with one to two verses from the Psalms to praise God. We always have so limited vocabulary when we want to praise God. Let's learn from the Psalms so that we can be able to praise God in a better way:

The Lord is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.              Psalm 16:5

Today's Reading: Genesis 26:34- 27:33

Bible Study

Today's passage talks about a topic interested by all parents nowadays. There are so many parenting courses trying to help parents to be good parents. And, today's passage is a classical example of "bad parenting".

Let's take a look at what Professor John Goldingay says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Goldingay) :

We have different ways of being foolish from Isaac and Rebekah's way. Maybe as parents we don't have time or energy to favor one child over another.  That was their foolishness: Isaac's favouring Esau, Rebekah's favouring Jacob.  For these parents, Esau is "his son," and Jacob, "her son."  It leads to deceit, blasphemy, distress, and fury.

What have you got today from this classical example of "bad parenting"?How would that affect your life and lifestyle?

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe":  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmax47l2hLU

The title I heard from Jesus today is: Bad parenting

What Jesus tells me today is a warning that we might have a chance to follow this kind of example to demonstrate bad parenting.

You must be thinking how can you demonstrate good parenting?

What I got from Jesus is that the answer is relational. Relational on three levels:
1. With Jesus
2. With each other, that is husband and wife
3. With children

And I do think that if you can have a good relationship with Jesus, all the other two areas will be covered. And, if you say that you have a good relationship with Jesus and yet you do not have a good relationship with your spouse and your children. I think you are just lying to yourself.

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to be with you each day in a real and intimate way so that we can be good parents.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
