Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people
3.   Open your heart to praise the Lord

         Know that the Lord, he is God!
    It is he who made us, and we are his;
    we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
    and his courts with praise!
    Give thanks to him; bless his name!
 For the Lord is good;
    his steadfast love endures forever,
    and his faithfulness to all generations.
                          Psalm 100:3-5

Confession and Repentance

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to work in you:

     “Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

     "Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word (Deuteronomy 19:1-13)

English(ESV): https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy 19&version=ESV

“This is the provision for the manslayer, who by fleeing there may save his life. If anyone kills his neighbor unintentionally without having hated him in the past— as when someone goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and his hand swings the axe to cut down a tree, and the head slips from the handle and strikes his neighbor so that he dies—he may flee to one of these cities and live, lest the avenger of blood in hot anger pursue the manslayer and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him fatally, though the man did not deserve to die, since he had not hated his neighbor in the past.Therefore I command you, You shall set apart three cities. And if the Lord your God enlarges your territory, as he has sworn to your fathers, and gives you all the land that he promised to give to your fathers— provided you are careful to keep all this commandment, which I command you today, by loving the Lord your God and by walking ever in his ways—then you shall add three other cities to these three, 10 lest innocent blood be shed in your land that the Lord your God is giving you for an inheritance, and so the guilt of bloodshed be upon you.
11 “But if anyone hates his neighbor and lies in wait for him and attacks him and strikes him fatally so that he dies, and he flees into one of these cities, 12 then the elders of his city shall send and take him from there, and hand him over to the avenger of blood, so that he may die. 13 Your eye shall not pity him, but you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, so that it may be well with you.

                   Deuteronomy 19:4-13

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

My Listening

      Today's passage talks about cities of refuge. It is so easy to sit on God's seat to judge other people. Here God commands the Israelites to give those who kill other people a chance. But if someone intentionally kills, then there will be no pity but to execute that person. The problem is, in the name of righteousness, human beings can be rather self-righteous and not real righteous. In fact, we do not know how to discern what is self-righteous and what is true righteous unless we have Jesus as Lord and be filled by the Holy Spirit.
      There is one key word here in this passage which shows you might make a wrong judgement, and the word is "hated". If we have anger or hated someone, then there is a high possibility that we are seating on God's seat, acting as God to make wrong judgement. Be careful!
       God is gracious and righteous. How gracious and righteous can we become following God's lead? Can we give people a chance and not judging them or even cut off our relationship with them when we think that they have wronged us?
      Can we be more gracious and not self-righteous?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Lead us to be close to you each day so that we can be more gracious and not self-righteous. Help us to give other people a chance but not taking your seat to judge those we do not like.  In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
1. Do you think you are more gracious or more righteous?

2. If you are more righteous, do you think you have taken God's seat to judge other people and you are self-righteous actually? If you are more gracious, do you think you do not have the courage to exercise God's righteousness? How can you be sure of this kind of discernment?

Praise and Thanksgiving
