Bible Study

In yesterday's passage Jesus shows an example when Satan becomes the lord of our life. We would become the furniture in Satan's home, an object rather than a living creature and we would be far away from God, not allowing the Holy Spirit to work and our sins cannot be forgiven.

In today's passage Jesus shows us that our careless word makes all the difference. It's always a character check to show whether we have Jesus as Lord.

N.T. Wright says:
If they can't figure out what Jesus is doing, they could at least take warning about their own behaviour.  Their speech - and remember that they had just accused Jesus of black magic - will show what's really in their hearts.  Casual words always reveal deep attitudes, Jesus said it long before Sigmund Freud did.  As a result, casual words will be used on the day of judgment as a reliable indicator of what really matters, the state of the heart.  The same question presses on us today, both for ourselves and for those who hear the message we preach and live.  Can we, can they, see to the heart of what's going on in the life and work of Jesus?  And can we see to the heart of what's going on in the church and the world today?

Watch out your careless word!

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage of scripture we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him, while listening to "Gabriel's Oboe"

What I heard from Jesus today is: Watch out your careless word!

What I got today from Jesus is a warning to have a regular check-up of how we speaks because our spoken words reveal the state of our hearts.

Jesus says:
Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit.  You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good?  For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.                                Matthew 12: 33-34

Two days ago I was walking into a train in Hong Kong. I heard a well-dressed young lady said to her boyfriend the most dirty language I have ever heard from a lady. I was shock! She was so loud and spoke it out so casually like singing a song! Everybody heard that in that part of the train! Then I thought at that time how important it is of what we speak. And, today we have this message from Jesus!

So, watch out your careless word, it shows whether you have a lifestyle of Christlikeness and whether Jesus is your Lord!

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to live out a lifestyle of Christlikeness that you are really our Lord in our thinking, our speaking and our doing.  In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
