DAY 221 (2019) - Fasting is our petition to God (Please click here for English podcast)

Silence

1.   Put on your “brakes” and stop for a moment of silence
2.   Wait for God. Breathe deep for God's peace and feel His presence. Exhale your worries.

Praise and Thanksgiving

1.   Think through your day, all the times that made you smile
2.   Thank God for all those moments, and for all those people

Confession and Repentance (Subjective Shifting Devotion Method http://bishopsilas.blogspot.ca/2009/08/count-down-5-subject-shifting-devotion.html)

1.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to shine on you that you are able to discover your sins and be willing to repent:

“Dear Holy Spirit, shine your light into the places of darkness in my life. Show me my sins, everything that blocks me from encountering God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”

2.  Through the Holy Spirit, examine yourself for a short silence and then pray:

"Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for our sins and being victorious over death and sin. I confess my sin to you(pause, to tell Jesus what the Holy Spirit has shown you). Forgive my sins by your blood and help me follow you. Holy Spirit, fill me that I may be able to receive your gift to love God and His people. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen."

The Word, Time with Abba (Psalm 85:1-7; Ezra 8:21-9:25; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13, Proverbs 21:1-2)

Today's main passage:
21 There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. 22 I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him. 23 So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.

 Ezra 8:21-23

Let's have a time to be still and give the Holy Spirit space to speak through the passage we have just read. Offer this time up to Jesus as you listen to him.

My Listening
There are so many kinds of petition in this world now. A petition with the signatures of more than 100,000 people might be able to change a government's decision on a particular bill. But, have you thought of today's message about "fasting" and "petition" that the most effective petition might be fasting?
Do you know why I know that?
1. The Bible tells us about the power of fasting to change things

2. My mother had a regular fasting lifestyle
My mother fasted one meal every Wednesday for all her children for more than thirty years and all three of us become pastors now.

3. I have a regular fasting lifestyle

4. My wife have a regular fasting lifestyle

5. My elder son and our daughter-in-law have a regular fasting lifestyle

6. Many brothers and sisters of our church have a regular fasting lifestyle

Quite often we fast one meal a week(usually on Friday to remember Jesus dying on the cross for us). The fasting we had the past few years:
40 days fasting, 100 days fasting, and a few times because of some crisis we had "Esther" fasting and that is three days without food(or even without water)!

We deeply understand and experience that fasting is not only the lifestyle of our new life in Christ, also it is perhaps the most effective and powerful petition to God!

Do you know that? Are you willing to make fasting the lifestyle of your new life in Christ?

Dear Lord Jesus,
Help us to make fasting the lifestyle of our new life in youIn Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Reflect on these questions:
1. What kind of inspiration and invitation have you received from today's message ?

2. What is your next step to make fasting the lifestyle of your new life in Christ?
